While we were at Jose Villa’s workshop in November, Jose gave us an assignment to go out onto the streets of El Carmen, and photograph 25 strangers. Well, the first day we were at the hacienda, we went exploring in El Carmen (the small town where the workshop is held). I met a few girls there, and struck up a conversation. A few days later, when Jose gave us the assignment, I went out wandering the streets again. I found a few different people to photograph, and then I happened to run into those same girls I met on the first day. I asked them if I could take their pictures again, and they said, “We are on our way to work. Why don’t you come with us.” And that’s how I ended up in the home of one of El Carmen’s residents. And there were about 20 people there working, separating corn husks that they will later sell to both Mexico and the U.S.. I had a wonderful time, taking pics of the people there, but also just chatting with everyone. Nothing makes me happier when I’m traveling in a foreign country, than to actually get to spend time with the actual local people, inside their homes. I think this is the best way to get to know the culture, and a fantastic way to gain new friendships, as well. I am so thankful they welcomed me into their home, and allowed me to document an hour of their lives. A big thank you to the people of El Carmen!
