As Wes and I were driving to a wedding the other day, we started talking about our wedding day which took place on October 4, 2003. Whenever we reminisce this day, there are only a few things that stand out. We remember the way we looked. Wes had this gorgeous curly hair. It’s the most perfect his hair has ever been, and on a normal day, his hair looks great. Almost 10 years later, all of his curls have disappeared. But he still looks incredibly handsome every day. I had this princess dress. I never thought I would wear a dress like that, but I had one of those “moments” when I tried it on. You know…they say when you put on the right wedding dress, you just know? That’s what happened when I tried on this dress. I just knew. The skirt was all poof. It would have made a princess swoon (or so I thought at the time). We also remember several relatives complaining when we got back from taking pictures. We had decided to wait to see each other until the ceremony. It was before we were in the photography business, and we didn’t know anything. We didn’t know how grouchy people can get when it comes to a wedding day and wanting to eat. Hungry guests can get downright rude! Needless to say, this is one of the reasons we often encourage our couples to see each before the ceremony, because the last thing you want to hear after you’ve just said “yes” to the love of your life, is a bunch of whining.
The rest of the day was a bit of a blur. I have flashes of memories….I remember smiling like a crazy person as I walked down the aisle. I remember singing during the ceremony. I remember dancing a few times during the reception. I remember not eating a thing at dinner. I remember two of my friends wearing ties around their heads at the reception while using a bubble maker to fill the room with bubbles. But everything flew by, and for the most part, we can barely remember what we experienced that day.
In three weeks we will be boarding a plane for Bergen, Norway, to celebrate nearly 10 years of marriage (if you didn’t get to see the post about how we met, and the challenges we have faced these past 10 years, hop over here and read all about it). And in honor of our upcoming vow renewal, we want to spend the next three weeks sharing a series of personal posts, celebrating what we love about each other, and what we love about our marriage. We realize how easy it is to get comfortable…how easy it is to forget to celebrate who your mate is, and all the things that make him/her the amazing person that you fell in love with. So in these posts, we’re going to be talking about the things we love about each other. Wes and I will both be sharing, so don’t worry, you’ll get the macho side of things too.
For now, we just leave you with this single image at the top of this post. We took this picture in June of 2003, on top of Lyderhorn, one of the 7 mountains that surround the city center of Bergen, Norway. It was that very week in Norway that we got engaged. We look the same in a lot of ways, and also so much different. You’ll rarely see Wes without facial hair these days. It’s usually a full beard now, and he kills it. I love my man with a manly beard!
Until next time….
